I can’t wait to learn more about you and connect!
I LOVE matcha! Matcha tea (both iced and hot), matcha lattes, matcha ice cream, matcha latte boba, matcha mochi muffins…the list goes on!
My whole name is 35 letters long. I have two middle names - the first is after my grandma and the 2nd is my Hawaiian name (which is 21 letters long…ok, Hawaiians, I know plenty of us get long names).
One of my favorite animals are donkeys. I can’t get over their sweet faces!
I’m a 90’s Hip Hop and R&B girl all the way!!! Oldies, Rock, Punk, and island music (of course) are all part of my playlist, too.
I am a jewelry maker (on Instagram: @onafridayjewelry) and blogger (on Instagram: @mixedplate). I’ve been making jewelry for around 16 years and had Mixed Plate, a blog where I would feature handmade independent small businesses, for about 14 years. Work and life kind of put these loves of mine on the back burner, but I am currently working on bringing these back.
I like to let my hair grow really long (like down to my butt! For real, my hairstylist and I only see each other once every year or two) and then chop it off to donate to Locks of Love.
One of my favorite jobs was working as an Admissions Director at a school for children with learning and attention differences. I loved my fellow teachers and admin, the parents, and of course the kids! While at that school I started a Kindness Club and Ambassador program with the students. It was beyond fulfilling to see how the kids opened up, trusted, and blossomed during their time with us at that school. It was a special place and time for me and man, I miss it!
Mango and papaya is my ultimate tropical breakfast.
My workout of choice - boxing and kickboxing. It’s like free therapy!
I am a true crime fan. I love the podcasts, the books, the documentaries…You know, it’s not something you just come out and share with people, but I figured we’re friends so it’s okay. But when you find your people, it’s on!
I love Stevie! Nicks and Wonder.
I la-la-LOVE pickle mango…but gotta be how grandma used to make it. I will drive 1/2 way around the island just to go up to this uncle’s house to see if he has any for sale that day. And you never know if it - or he - will be there…but it’s SO worth it if you can score some!
One of the many travel goals I have is spending time in Bali. It has been on my list for some time now and I hear it calling me!
I have a passion for small, handmade businesses. I really admire how much talent people have to offer this world and am constantly inspired by their creativity. #supportsmallbusiness #shoplocal
In addition to On a Friday and Mixed Plate, I used to have two other online businesses. Several years ago I had Punk-n-Pie, where I sold cool kids clothing and accessories. It was fun and super cute. I was also a Virtual Assistant where I helped create websites, set up newsletters, social media, and more for entrepreneurs. I worked with life coaches, lawyers, a baker, Personal Trainer and Pro MMA fighter, consultants, and an MMA gym. Being able to watch someone have an idea for their business and see them launch or continue to grow it and take it to the next level was an experience I am very grateful to have had.
I miss the sunshine and ocean and can’t wait for my next salt water healing session!
Another great opportunity I had was while working at The Candy Store. Yes, you read that right. I worked at an actual candy shop and it was glorious! Owned by a wife and her husband, this small business is a staple in many people’s daily and weekly routines in San Francisco. Diane, the owner and mastermind behind the shop (seriously, she knows all the things about candy, where everything in her shop is made and by which maker, the ingredients, all of it) created the “Kid in a Candy Store” program where kids would “apply” via handwritten letter as to why they would want to “work” there and tell us about their charity of choice. They would then come spend a couple hours on a weekend with us, earning tips and 20% of their sales which they would then donate to their chosen charity, all while learning about customer service, handling transactions, building self confidence, and so much more. It was not only a fun time but a super special experience to be a part of.
I love handmade personalized greeting cards and letters. Nothing beats handwritten notes and I believe they’re still the best way to send aloha.
I’ve been to Japan with my family twice and we are obsessed. For Hawaii folks it is a comfortable and familiar place both culturally and food-wise. Then there’s the matcha. Oh, the matcha I consumed and brought back with me (Ippodo tea, anyone?)! Also, can we take a moment to talk about how I could have lived off the convenience store food?!? Definitely something you wouldn’t say about the U.S., right? I cannot wait to go back.
I used to color my hair pretty often. From various shade of red, purple, pink, and blue…Ooh…definitely feeling that itch for fun hair again!
I love plants but over time have learned that I am a better plant mama than succulent mama. You know how they say, “start with succulents or maybe a cactus because you can’t kill those.” Yeah…RIP.
I have a thing for socks…and if they have cute animals or food (especially food with faces) on them then it’s all over.
I believe in the USPS (even more important during our current climate) and love buying stamps. This year it’s even more important to me to support them so I’ve built up quite a collection of stamps (they have really fun ones, so check them out!) and can’t wait to put them to good use (see #18).
I try to mediate every single day. It doesn’t always look the same - it could be while I’m making my matcha, playing my singing bowls, or maybe just a 5-minute moment to be still and breathe. (ps - there’s no wrong way to meditate!)
My family, those I love, and Hawaii mean everything to me. I am so grateful to have such amazing people in my life who support and encourage my dreams and ideas, make me laugh, and aloha me always. I love you all and appreciate you more than you know and hope I show it because you deserve all the props.
